Antique Cross of Mentana from 1867. Nickel silver cross bearing the Papal arms and "Fidei et Virtuti "(loyal and meritorious). On the arms of the cross they are inscribed PP,PIUS,IX and 1867.The front of the cross has a laurel wreath,a latin cross and inscribed above is "Hinc Victoria"(hence victory). In excellent condition. Missing its stripe ribbon. This is a very rare medal in this country. I have had it for about 30 years . I purchased it at an old house in uptown New Orleans......The medal was created by Pope Pius IX on 14th of the November 1867 to commemorate the Battle of Mentana for the 3000 Pontifical troops and 2000 French troops defeated an attempt by Garibaldi to take Rome. The Imperial French goverment authorised the wearing of the medal with uniform. It is 1 7/8 inches tall and 1 3/4 inches wide....It is increasingly rare.......We do not ship internationally. So do not bid unless you have USA shipping address. Will be shipped in a box.
