Cat's Whisker Radio - Ricevitore Galena - Detektorempfänger - Poste � Galène Crystal Radio Receiver/Receiving Set, with no markings, although its boasts an all-important "BBC" PMG approved stamp, it does not carry a * GPO registration number.... * British crystal sets are of the highest quality, and regarded by collectors the world over today as the best, whilst the British PMG Registration Number system makes the earlier British crystal radios even more collectable. On October 18, 1922, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was set up by a consortium of radio receiver manufacturers (Western Electric, Marconi, General Electric, British Thomson-Houston, Radio Communication and Metropolitan Vickers) for regular broadcasting of programmes of speech and music, but the spread of broadcasting was more or less held back by the need to obtain a receiving licence from the Postmaster-General. On January 1st, 1925 stamp regulations were abolished and firms were no longer obliged to use any BBC stamps ..... some of the now rarest crystal sets were therefore made in the smallest outlets, such as bicycle shops, many with a distributor's plate, many without .... From an estate sale, where all other items dated from the early to mid-1920s The ebonite panel is in good clean order, with no splits, merely a screwhole chip in two corners. Period terminals and tuning knob (a few minutes with a duster has worked wonders). Original enclosed "L-shaped" panel-mounted 'quality' detector, one bracket with a slither missing, complete with perfect replaced 'dustproof' perspex tube, cat's whisker and piece of galena rock - presumably an unusual example, not displayed in either "Tickling the Crystal 1"or the celebrated Brown Brothers Ltd catalogue of 1925. The cabinet has a 'TMC' feel about it, with excellent original "BBC' water transfer, but I make no promises that it is original to the panel. It is sound throughout, with its original finish boasting almost no wear. No chips or dings of note to corners. No touch-ups. No woodworm. Unl ikely therefore to need any cosmetic restoration. There is a annotated sticker in the lid saying 1922/1924, presumably a link to its age! The insides are in excellent condition, extremely clean, with all its bits, and a "HARKO" CHANNELLED VARIOMETER Found in a loft, with various other items from the same period, to be listed separately.
