REMARKABLE EARLY 19 TH CENTURY SHERATON TRANSITIONAL EMPIRE CONNETICUT RIVER VALLEY SECRETARY DESK WITH PROVENANCE With the highest compliment we could pay any piece we are delighted to present you with this stunning early 19 th Century (circa 1820-30’s) Sheraton period transitioning to very earliest Empire period Connecticut River Valley (South Hadley, Massachusetts) secretary desk in bold crotched mahogany and original red washed native New England wide plank pine. Everything is just wonderfully correct with this sweet little Secretary! Each drawer bottom and all the back panels are deeply chamfered cut on all edges. We have enclosed photos of the dovetailed base of the secretary to assuage our following of antique ‘experts’ ready to inform us that the secretary has been cut down. It hasn’t! This fine desk has cut out sides and bracket base legs and is 37” long, 17 ½ wide and 54” tall. The secretary has one large drawer with cubbies and vertical document slots over three drawers of its base unit. Lastly, and of special interest, this desk was presented to John McKnight from his father and bares the inscription. John McKnight was one of the McKnight brothers who developed America ’s first planned community; The McKnight section of Springfield , Massachusetts . This is a wonderful New England period antique priced ridiculously low reflecting the good buy that we got it for. This is the premise Miner Miracles Antiques operates on-a fair deal for all our customers! FURNITURE WOODS 101 We get a lot of questions on whether or not the furniture we list is comprised of solid wood or veneered. We would like to take this opportunity to give our customers a brief explanation of the construction of antique furniture. Most specialty cuts of wood i.e., tiger maple, bird’s eye maple, tiger oak (a.k.a. quarter sawn) crotched mahogany, Cuban mahogany, burled walnut, flame birch, flame cherry, etc., are applied to furniture via veneers. These choice cuts of woods were prohibitively expensive and rarely used in their solid wood form. However, t were exceptions to this. When we are fortunate enough to encounter one of these exceptions, we try to be clear in identifying the solid wood construction. In some cases, these woods are no longer available at any price. If our listing doesn’t state that it is made of solid wood, then the furniture was made from a combination of veneers and solid secondary woods. We list the specialty woods in our listings first, as that is the most prominent feature. Please read descriptions carefully and look at all photos. Ask any questions that you may still have. Requests of additional photos are encouraged. We hope this clarifies for you some of the mystique involved with buying antique and vintage furniture. Our listed prices reflect the condition of the item. We usually provide photos of all angles for your inspection. Please LOOK at all photos carefully. We deal in high volume and occasionally we might miss something in our listings. Nothing is ever intentional. We are happy to clarify any questions you might have or provide you with further details or photos. Requests for additional photos are not a problem and recommended.
