The German clockmakers were located mostly in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) where they produced, among other styles, thousands of hand-carved cuckoo clocks. Some of these were made from Linden wood, some from Walnut and others from Oak. Can you imagine how much harder the carving task would be when carving a clock from Oak? Among the many German cuckoo clock makers the Kuehn Brothers located in Freiburg/Breisgau were regarded to be masters. Although most cuckoo clocks were not signed by their makers, the Kuehn Brothers embossed their initials "GK" (standing for Gebruder Kuehn), onto the back plate of their clocks- a mark of pride unmatched by most of the other makers. The spelling of the Kuehn name varies depending on which history you consult. Sometimes it is found as KUEHN and in other books as KUEN and in others KUHN...and I've even found one reference that spells their name as KUEHNER (which may have been a different maker altogether). This outstanding example of their FOX AND GRAPES cuckoo clock takes its theme from the old fable by Aesop in which a Fox was interested in the bunches of grapes overhead. Although he tried and tried to jump high enough to reach the grapes, the Fox failed every time. In disgust, he turned away and left the vineyard comnforting himself by saying..."Those grapes were probably sour anyway". And thus the expression: 'SOUR GRAPES' came into our idiomatic expressions. This magnificent clock has been cleaned, serviced and the bellows recovered to add many years of cuckooing for the next owner. We bought the clock from a collector of German ancestry who specializes in Black Forest clock service. Consequently, it runs perfectly.
