This Auction: is a mola that tells a story of something that generally is no longer practiced in Kuna culture but that used to be practiced. This mola shows 2 curanderos(medicine men) with a young patient and they are performing an exorcism. In the past when a child, for instance would have epileptic siezures, it was thought that they were being possesed by a demon. In situations like this, the curanderos would get together and perform an exorcism. In the middle top section of this mola you can see a bird. The bird actually has a lot of significance because Kunas use medicinal plants to heal. One way that the Kunas choose which plant to use would be by watching which plant(s) the birds would land on. If the bird landed on a specific plant, then the curanderos would take that as an omen and use that plant for healing. I love the details in the faces of both the curanderos and the child. I believe that the sawtooth details along with the bright orange fabric really make the subjects of this textile art stand out. This mola is made from two full layers of fabric which are black and orange. It also includes a layer of many different partial layers that make up the multi colored background. This mola measures aproximately 15x10 inches. As with all of our molas, it is completely handsewn by a Kuna Indian residing in the San Blas region of Panama. Thank you for looking. True molas are only made by Kuna Indians. This t ribe of Indians resides in La Comarca De San Blas, Panama. The only molas that are true and genuine will come from this specific group. The word Mola is blouse in the Kuna language. Kuna women used to paint designs on themselves which eventually evolved into making favric panels for blouses from fabric with similar designs. Today, Molas are used for many different things and come in various shapes and sizes. WHAT IS A GOOD QUALITY MOLA? Every person will find different molas beautiful. However are some general guidelines, Molas that are geometric and proportional are higher quality and more pleasing to the eye. Molas that are made from more layers of fabric are generally highly sought due to the complexity of the work. Molas that are neatly handsewn instead of machine sewn are also much more valuable because they take more work and time and are the genuine mola. Many Kuna Indians tell thier life stories with the creation of Molas. These Molas are more valuable because you are getting a piece of Kuna culture in your art work.
