With a very wide stance - 20 between the legs on the ends - this is an ideal table for a breakfast area, brunch nook, or whatever the next Martha Stewart clone says to call it. Human-sized chairs can be accommodated between the legs, and two people can have their snack, petite dejeuner, or work on their income taxes, without raising a leaf. Silly of me - if anyone over the age of 35 sets out to do his or her annual income tax, more than one full table will be needed. And if two of them are involved, theyll need an accountant and a lawyer. Or maybe two of each? Thanks, Uncle Sam. Without our almost unintelligibly convoluted tax laws, there would be another 110(?) million marginal lawyers and accountants out of work, on welfare, and our taxes would go up again.
With the leaves down, this table measures 38 by 26 ( 38 x 52 with the leaves up) so will fit into a compact area. NOW FOR THE BEST PART: This table is made from some of the nicest curly cherry that I have seen. Curly cherry is not usually as pronounced a figure as curly maple, but this table comes close. It is impossible to photograph the change in luminosity as the angle of view changes, but it is dramatic. Our staff (actually, thats sort of pretentious - we have one guy out back there doing all the work, sniffing all those fumes and getting a little funny in the afternoons, but he does great restoration work, and seems happy when he can talk) aims to produce a finish that looks like a well-tended, 100-year-old hand-rubbed finish, rather than that over-refinished, glossy look so often seen. We rarely use any stain, so the color you see is the natural wood, just as it was 150 years ago. And the color will deepen and become more rich with time. Our finishes tend to get better and better with age , as the areas that are frequently touched acquire a nice, seemingly century-old, patina.
