US CURRENCY 1864 3 CENT FRACTIONAL Old Paper Money VG 1864 3 CENT FRACTIONAL NOTE THIRD ISSUE This is a distinctively different note from most US Currency. It is one of the HARDEST TO FIND-- Extra SMALL SIZE FRACTIONAL NOTES , the 1864 $.03 US NOTE , in VERY GOOD condition in my opinion, but you can judge for yourself to make the final decision with these photos. You can enlarge both photos. It has the small portrait of GEORGE WASHINGTON . The Congress issued authority to print the 3 Cent only one time, for 1864 during the American Civil War when the coin shortage was acute. This was the only time a 3 Cent note was ever issued in America! It is green on the reverse and was printed in 1864 during the US Civil War under President ABRAHAM LINCOLN. In the years of the US Civil War starting in 1862 there was a critical shortage of coins. It became such a problem that for 14 years the government issued small size notes called FRACTIONAL CURRENCY. This was from the third issue of fractional paper money ever issued by the USA. Back when this note was issued, fractional currency was cut by hand using scissors and it certainly shows. The note is nearly intact due to its age, it has no tiny pin holes no writing, or ink. There are signs of heavy use including some edge wear and staining. T his note is otherwise fairly clean, but somewhat brittle, it is a good looking example of old paper money especially for a small size fractional note which are often very worn out when they are found. It should best be kept in its plastic sleeve to protect it. This is about as old as US money gets. The art work is simple and the note is less than one quarter the size of the modern notes. It has straight edges. Book value is $30.00 in Very Good condition, $125 in CU , so place a bid and enjoy a bargain. Some retailers and Shop at Home TV charge much more that book value for this note when they can find it. This note does not come up for auction very often and it often sells for well over book value even on Ebay!
