This is an incredible book originally compiled by Major Frank Anders of the Army Corps of Engineers and winner of a Medal of Honor in WWI. Only one known copy of the original is left at the North Dakorta State Archives, Anders was also a dedicated historian of the Custer saga and spent years compiling this book; today, only three known copies remain. Anders traced by foot the entire march of the Seventh Cavalry from Fort Lincoln starting on May 17, 1876 day by day as it marched through North Dakota.! In doing so he followed in Custer's footsteps marking the location of every campsite and other places of interest along this long march. More to the fact, he used every known Army report, letters from officers, journals, diaries to record all on the march as to developments, the land covered, deaths along the way and burial sites still markeds today, and each of these is mapped out to the extent of degrees, minuites and seconds. The result is by far the most detailed saga of the march in including decisions made and why, relations between officers and the men and officers themselves as well as the common soldiers. As a result he not only gives one an account of the Seventh Cavalry, but by far the most highly detailed narrative on any regiment headed to battle with a strong emphasis on personal as well as military matters. The saga is one of detailed military maneuvers and also the human story along the way with both the good and bad, and often humor as only soldiers could appreciate, With the book is his famous map of the march in a large two page foldout that identifies each campsite-almost all of this follows the present interstate, and these sites are readily open to anyone wishing to visit, often with relics left behind. The map is co-ordianted to present day towns and very easy to follow by auto ad also stop and visit the sites. A word of warning-many of these first have to be walked to thru heavy bramble bushhes with thorns and one should wear heavy shirts and pants, but to do so using the tome as a guide is a thrilling adventure in history as one can pick and choose sites as they travel using the book, and alll are really worth a visit. This is an exact reproduction of Anders original book; the history is superb as well as the detaiuls of the march and its events both good and bad. A great chyance to own a copy at a very reasonable cost; only a limited number were published for members of the Little Big Horn Associates with a few left over for sale; this copy is absolute mint.
