1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn: U.S. Army Springfield .45/55 caliber carbine case. On June 25, 1876, George A. Custer , two of his brothers, a brother-in-law, a nephew, and his immediate command of five cavalry companies were annihilated by the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne. During the next 1 and 1/2 days, the Sioux and Cheyenne surrounded Custer's remaining command under Major Marcus Reno, and located 5 miles to the SE of Last Stand Hill. This .50 caliber Springfield Benet-primed carbine cartridge was recovered in the early 1980s by a local rancher (Henry Weibert) on privatge land and on a slope to the east of and overlooking Reno/Benteen Hill. The case is from a Sioux or Cheyenne warrior who had fired at the troopers atop Reno/Benteen Hill. The case was obtained by the seller in 1987 from Weibert. A photo map of the area the case was found will be provided to the buyer, along with a notarized Certificate of Authenticity.
