God told me to came back and tell my people they must be good and love one another and not fight or steal or lie. He gave me this dance to give my people." These are the words that were spoken by a Paiute prophet named Wovoka after a full eclipse on New Years Day of 1889. This dance he brought to his people was the "Ghost Dance". By this time is history all of the tribes were being kept captive of the US government. Most of the treaties had been broken and promises we not kept. Food, clothing and shelter were in short supply. Most had lost everything they owned and were barely scraping by. To say the least times were desperate. Wovoka brought new hope to the people, his vision had lead him to believe that if the dancers would dance for five days and four nights, then bath in the river before returning home that the buffalo would return as would their love ones that had died in the Indian Wars.
