This is apparently a clone of an old Tracy Mincer "Custombilt." William E. Unger, Jr. PH. D., has compiled an excellent book on the history of these pipes (They were first spelled Custom-Bilt, then later Custombilt). This pipe has no stampings but is carved in the Custombilt style. It is a saddle-bit Canadian, a popular Custombilt model of the '50s. I recently sold an authenticated Custombilt Canadian similar to this for over $100. Mincer was one of those extraordinary legends of American pipemaking. Mincer set out to build cooler smoking pipes betting on the fact that thicker walls would do the job. He hand-carved his pipes to give them a rugged look and also to increase the cooling surface of the bowls. He was to carry this to an even further degree after he sold Custombilt and developed his The Doodler pipe. Mincer competed with Kaywoodie and Dunhill to produce the premium pipes of the mid-20th Century. Because his unique - t were no two alike - pipes were so popular many pipemakers tried to copy them. This one appears to be one of those clones. This pipe has been smoked. It cleaned quite well and has been totally restored by Neil Corliss Sr. of Juno Isles, Fla., a master wooden boat builder and custom billiard cue maker.
