2 POUND CUTLERS HAMMER FOR KNIFEMAKING Cutlers' Hammer, Knife Makers' Hammer, Saw Makers' Hammer, and File Makers' hammer. This style of hammer has been called all of the above (and probably some other names too!) It is characterized by having most of its mass on one side of the head. This feature allows the hammer to "self-center" while it is in use, helping to leave fewer tool marks. Swordsmiths in Japan still use this style of hammer. The cutlers of Sheffield , England used this style of hammer during the golden years of cutlery production t I think it is significant that this style of hammer was used to make the tools listed above. After all, why would it get used by different cultures, at different times, if it did not work? This particular hammer weighs 2 pounds and 8 ounces, with handle. The handle is handmade, from hickory, and has two steel wedges to hold it secure. I do not use the weak, softwood, wooden wedges that come with the steel ones. Instead, I made the wooden wedge out of rosewood. The hickory is sanded to a smooth finish and coated with several coats of Tung oil. I purchased this hammer in a very rough state and have done a lot of work to it but, I just do not use it enough and so I am selling it. Whoever purchases this will probably want to round the edges over a little bit more as they were leaving marks when I used it last. I leave this up to your preference. Returns will not be accepted on this item. Please examine the pictures closely. Ask all of your questions well before bidding ends. I am not trying to stick you with a bum tool. This is well made and sturdy. I would not have spent time and energy on it if it was not. I just do not have time to spend on returns, if you change your mind you could always re-list it yourself. Shipping for this item is $9.00 via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. I prefer to ship heavy items like this in flat rate boxes because, if you bid (and win) other auctions of mine, I do not have to charge more than $9.00 shipping, as long as your items fit in the box. You do need to contact me if you wish to take advantage of the combined shipping offer, especially if one of the auctions is still going.
