Translucent green Czech moldavite tektite specimen -- 50 gram ( 0.5 to 2 gram pieces lot )

Weight: 50 gram (250 carat)

Size: 0.5 g to 2 g each piece (35 to 45 pieces each lot)

They are the same translucent green as the other individual moldavite pieces . They look darker because they are not pictured individually but stacked together, the light is blocked by pieces under the surface.

***Tektites are formed by the impact of a large meteorite or comet nuclei with the earth's surface. The earth's surface at the impact site melts into a glass becoming the tektite. Not all impacts form tektites, in fact most known craters do not have tektites associated with them. A number of special circumstances are required before tektites are formed. Tektites, which have been found on every continent, are tar black or blackish brown, while Moldavites, which are to be found mainly in the Moldau river valley in Czechoslovakia, are a deep green color. The area around the Ries Crater, in Germany, is probably the source for Moldavites -- the age of the crater, 14.7 million years old, is identical with the age of Moldavites. Moldavites are by far the most beautiful of the tektites and are the only known gemstone of extraterrestrial origin. Moldavites have always been a highly prized material due to the incredible emerald green color making it very suitable for use in jewelry. Moldavites are the rarest of gems, rarer even than diamonds, rubies or emeralds. Since their origin is due to an impact event, further discovery of new deposits seems very unlikely. ***
