DAGUERREOTYPE AND ORIGINAL CASE - CIVIL WAR ERA - circa 1860 - 1870's, with an image of a woman and a child. I don't really know what to call this - don't know if it is a Daguerreotype, a tin type, or an ambrotype Original dark brown, almost burgundy leather / leattte case with pressed bird decoration on the front and back. Looks maybe like a peacock with a long flowing tail. Garlands of vines and berries around the bird. Tooled gold decoration around all of the outside and inside edges. Fabric hinge at the back, between the front and back is apart, so the case is in two pieces, the front and the back . It came apart when I was taking the pictures. You could easily put a piece of dark fabric tape over the backside edge to rejoin this. Inside of case is beautiful - velvet on one side and tooled gold tone oval frame on the other side. The image is a woman sitting, writing, while she is looking at the little girl. The image is dark but still has some good detail to it. T is some cloudiness when you hold it at different angles. At some angles it looks as though the two figures are separated from the background. I am sure t are better terms to describe the condition of the image, but I don't know them. If you ask questions I will answer. Closed, the case measures over 3 inches wide by 3 ¾ inches, and about 1/2 inch deep when closed. read more
