Description: Sixth plate portrait of handsome, immaculately groomed young man. The image has a lovely bronze tone, which I have tried to capture in the photos. The young man's elegent dress, as well as the quality of the case itself, indicates that the subject was wealthy and privileged. The velvet liner, although split in two places, is still mostly legible and reads "Brady's Gallery, 205 & 207 Broadway, New York." The address is that of Matthew Brady's original studio, 205 & 207 Broadway (at the corner of Fulton St.) w Brady maintained his principal gallery between 1844 and 1858. Brady (1823 - 1896) is commonly regarded as the greatest American photographer of the mid Nineteenth Century. By the time this image was taken sometime in the early 1850's Brady was already established as the leading portraitist of wealthy and famous Americans, and would go on to become the primary photographic chronicler of the Civil War. Although the case show moderate wear (see below), it was obviously an expensive and elegant object. Condition: The plate has considerable tarnish along the top, left, and bottom edges of the frame and numerous fine, hairline surface scratches that nonetheless do not seriously interfere with the image. With the exception of the velvet liner (which is split in a couple of places, as shown in the photos), the case is in excellent condition, with the original hinge fully intact.
