Description: Two companion quarter plate daguerreotypes in matching frames housed in an unusual and beautiful double Union case. The dags depict a husband and wife who appear to be in their thirties. He has light colored eyes, dark brown hair and a brown beard and looks at us with a superior, complacent expression. By contrast, his wife seems warm and sympathetic. She smiles slightly and looks at us with a frank, open gaze. The details of their attire reveal that the couple is prosperous. She wears a dark dress with a lace collar, and a beautiful large cameo. Matching cameo earrings dangle from her ears, and she wears a gold watch chain around her neck. He wears a jacket with a velvet collar. His satin vest and bow tie display the same rich, subtle pattern, and his coat is open to reveal a gold watch chain containing what appears to be Solomon's Knot or some other religious or fraternal symbol. (Solomon's knot was a motif frequently used in European synagogues, so this might be a Jewish couple, a hypothesis that is consistent with the woman's features). The dags are housed in a double thermoplastic (or "Union") case manufactured by A.P. Critchlow & Co. A speciman of this same case (for a single image) is in the collection of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. The case was manufactured in about 1855. read more
