AFRICAN DAN KRAN PORO MASK LIBERIA IVORY COAST This is a superb fine and rare Dan Kran Poro face mask, a deeply hollowed overall form with a broad-lipped, pierced, naturalistic mouth, having shaped metal plugs for teeth. The nose is fine and realistic with distinct half-closed, pierced eyes, and tears, beneath a delicately sloping and rounded forehead. The thin-slit-eyed Dan masks are unique and only carved by the initiated members of the male Poro Society. A mask served to protect a young initiate from destructive evil forces. It could also create a link between the human realm and the spirit realm. The vital strength of the mask "du" was given by Zlan, the 'Creator'. A Dan mask can also serve as a tool of communication between the living and their ancestors. This exceptional Dan mask is from the estate of the late John W. Barnett of Chicago, and was originally purchased by him at American Art Galleries Ltd., also of Chicago, in the early 70's. T is an old collection number on the back of the mask, as well as the original American Art Galleries number and tag, which correspond to the item number on the 1970's receipt (see picture #8).
