All the protective magnetic tape is still in place and has been left on for the pictures. It comes 100% complete with styro shell, white outer box, certificate of title and care/handling sheet. The model... Danbury Mint issued this Dry Lakes Racer soon after the 1955 Corvette Racer and this T-Bird issue is long sold out. It was only available for a very short time and it is now rare and very hard to find. It's equipped with the new style door hinges and is packed with intricate detailing including the incredibly real looking racing harness and buckles. AND IT'S NOT A ROAD RUNNER! Some History... Mans obsession with speed dates back thousands of years and mans obsession with being the fastest in an automobile began the day the automobile was built. In the early stages of timed racing t were no asphalt tracks so the perfect place to test these early machines was on a dry lake bed with its naturally flat surface. Lake bed racing began in the early 1900’s as people from all around the world began pushing their automobiles past the limits just to set a speed record. In the United States the vast salt flats of Bonneville became the primary place to run since it had the room for speeds of over 300 mph and Daytona was used for many other speed trials and racing events. While the speed records of over 350 mph were being broken at Bonneville in 1938, the people in Southern California were doing their own thing racing against each other across the lake beds in Muroc, El Mirage and Harper dry lakes. After years of unorganized lake bed racing and just before World War II the people from the Los Angeles area organized the SCTA, Southern California Timing Association. During the war all types of racing came to a halt but soon after the war racers were back on the flats running anything they could put together. In 1946 Wally Parks helped in reorganizing the SCTA and then soon became SCTA’s first post war president and then general manager in 1947. By 1949 access to suitable dry lake courses soon diminished so Parks led the campaign to gain permission for the use of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, setting the stage for SCTA’s Bonneville National Speed Trials. Then in 1951, Wally Parks founded the National Hot Rod Association, NHRA, which was a prospective alternative to dry lake bed and illegal street racing which focused on timed short distance acceleration races. Racers continued to set world speed records on the dry lake beds in the 1950’s while the newly organized dry lake bed alternative “Drag Racing” continued to gain in popularity.
