DANIEL E. FRENCH ~ 2 JOHN HARVARD BRONZE BOOKENDS Featured today is this great pair of RARE Antique Bronze John Harvard Bookends by famed sculptor Daniel E. French. It shows John Harvard sitting in a chair with a book on his right leg. These would have a great set of bookends for someone at Harvard or who attended Harvard. ….for as it states on the card attached to the bottoms of both bookends “ No home of a Harvard man is complete without a pair of John Harvard bookends ”. A gift that can be rubbed for luck by their next owner – just like the famed Harvard statue. This particular set of bookends, designed by Daniel E. French and manufactured by The Jennings Bros. Mfg. Co. are very RARE & HARD TO FIND – I can only find 2 that have sold since 2008 . Date this set was made in unknown. These bookends are miniatures of the famed John Harvard statue in Harvard Yard. SOME FACTS ABOUT THE FAMED STATUE IN HARVARD: The statue itself is known locally as "The Statue of Three Lies." According to The Harvard Guide (http://www./guide/to_do/to_do2.html) the statue, located in front of University Hall was designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1815, & then cast in 1884 by Daniel Chester French (sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial). Although the inscription reads "John Harvard, Founder, 1638," none of these three statements is true. The seated figure is not really John Harvard, since no authentic pictures of Mr. Harvard existed; John Harvard was not the founder of Harvard College; & the College was founded in 1636. The statue is an immensely popular draw for tourists, & thousands of visitors every year rub John Harvard's shoe for luck. The bookends are cast with exacting detail & have a coppery bronze finish. They weigh approximately 6 lbs. …so expect a HEAVY box to be shipped. Their bottoms are green felt-covered. Both have labels, on the bottom of both bookends as the photo shows. They state: JOHN HARVARD Founder of Harvard University No home of a Harvard man is complete without a pair of John Harvard bookends. Designed by Daniel E. French "Sculptor" Manufactured exclusively by The Jennings Bros Mfg. Co. Bridgeport , Conn. " JB2654 Pat Appl for Daniel C. French Sc" is stamped into the metal on each bookend on the back base. *****Bring your best offers – this set WILL NOT LAST LONG.***** Just acquired at an estate sale & needs a new home.
