Large art glass, Daum pate de verre rose bowl. The Daum Company started in 1878 when Jean Daum took over a rundown watch-glass factory in Nancy, France -- which is in the eastern province of Lorraine. After his death in 1885, Jean Daum' s sons Auguste and Antonin took over the factory. Auguste and Antonin mastered complex glassmaking techniques and showed their glassware at the Paris International Exhibition in 1889. (This is the same exhibition that launched The Eiffel Tower.) The Daum rose bowl, which measures approximately 10" across and is about 3.5" deep, is predominantly pinkish lavendar in color and has a pale green section in the center base of the bowl. The bowl is handmade and comes from France. The art glass style is known as pate de verre. Pate de verre is a style of glass that involves making a paste of glass and then firing it. This style of glass making accomodates the precise placement of glass colors. Although pate de verre dates back to the ancient Egyptians, it really came into its own over a century ago when it was revived by a group of French artists. The Daum rose bowl up for auction is in pristine condition and comes from my mother's collection of art glass.
