It depicts the view outside his sanitorium room window at Saint-Remy-de-Provence (in southern France) at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. In September 1888, before Van Gogh's December breakdown that resulted in hospitalisation in Arles, he painted "Starry Night over the Rhone".
