Provenance: The Dean Lesher estate private collection of Western American Art. "Dean Lesher was the quintessential suburban newspaper publisher. He believed passionately in the value of local news, the power of customized editions and the obligation to personally get involved in local and regional issues that mattered. He followed these passions and rode the post-World War II economic boom in the West to create a powerful and rich publishing empire in San Francisco's East Bay. "He was certainly one of the greats of California journalism," said Tom Goldstein, former dean of the school of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. "He left an imprint, not only on the notion of suburban journalism and what it should be. He had extraordinary impact on the growth of a county." At his funeral, then-Gov. Pete Wilson said: "knowing Dean Lesher was like reading a spellbinding novel. I'm sorry the last chapter has ended. What he has produced is a life few of us will lead." And a remarkable life it was. Lesher delighted in describing himself as a simple country boy. A country boy, maybe, but t was nothing simple about Dean Stanley Lesher. Before his death at age 90 on May 13, 1993, Lesher had transformed several free weekly shoppers into a powerful news group which was sold by his wife on August 29, 1995 for $360 million." ~~~~ About the artist: DAVID LEMON MASTER OF BRONZE "The artist David Lemon was born in 1945 in San Diego, California. His father was in the Navy and David attended schools across the US and in Guam. David's family finally decided to make their home in Salt Lake City, Utah. David's great-grandparents originally settled in Utah in 1848. Through the stories told by his father and grandparents, David developed a deep interest in the Old West. He has vivid memories of hearing his grandmother tell him about her childhood in a log cabin with sod roof that mountain lions crossed causing the roof boards to creak. She told him as a little girl, she used to watch the Indians going on their hunting parties through the trees. The memories his grandmother shared with him stayed with David, inspiring him and awakening his imagination. David would get into trouble in grade school for drawing Indians instead of paying attention in class. His parents encouraged him in his art despite calls from his fifth grade teacher saying that he was ignoring classroom activities while he spent his time drawing cowboys and Indians. David Lemon's sculpting career began his senior year in high school when he signed up for a ceramics class. All thumbs when it came to throwing pots, David's teacher suggested he try his hand at sculpting the terra-cotta clay - His efforts earned him three scholarships. For the next twelve years, including a four-year stint in the U S Navy, David sculpted only as a hobby, slowly, freely developing his own unique style, in bronze, of free-spirited men and women as well as the animals that once roamed the Wild West. Today, the face of the Old West stares out from the vibrant bronze images that spill from his vision. His work, in all its gritty detail, provides a window into a time when possibilities were endless, when survival wasn't "guaranteed", and man lived or died by the sheer force of the human spirit. In galleries and private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East, Lemon's studies of the American Experience speak proudly and passionately of it's people. His gold-medal winning pieces transcend culture and have touched hearts around the world. He has had many one-man shows across ...
