I just purchased a portfolio of lithographs from a local estate sale featuring the work of noted jazz artist, DAVID STONE MARTIN. This auction is for a printed folder designed and signed by Martin with six (6) lithographs. There is an original penciled note on the inside cover of the folder that reads, "Happy New Year to the Judge, David". Please see photos for further description. The folder is heavy manila rag paper and measures 15" by 12" on the front half and the back half is 2" longer with a crease to fold over. It has not been folded. The folder is in good condition without rips, bends or fading and is signed. This folder features a series of clarinets with musical notes above sketched in simple modern lines in black. This dates from the 1950-6 era and was from the Westinghouse Presents David Stone Martin, Porfolios of Collector Prints, a special commissioned series by Martin of his "Interpretations of Jazz" created exclusively for Westinghouse. It was part of an estate that was stored away for 20 years and included other artists from this period. STONE was a well known listed artist and illustrator and one of the most prolific graphic designers of the postwar era, creating over 400 album covers. Much of his work spotlighted jazz, with his hand-drawn, calligraphic line perfectly capturing the energy and spontaneity of the idiom.
