At the risk of embarrassing David Winter, I feel that it is right to call this outstanding sculpture the masterpiece of his life so far. He'd been thinking about the form that might develop for about eighteen months and ideas were simmering away during the 1990 "Thank You" tours. When David realised that Falstaff's Manor would reach the end of its limited edition run of 10,000 during 1991, he decided to sculpt a replacement because he had enjoyed making Falstaff's and he had always had a soft spot for the piece. He has had the urge to do something bigger for quite a while and felt he wanted to do something special for the Collectors and give them something back in return for all their loyal support. He started devising the shapes at the beginning of this year and found that they all came comparatively quickly because they had been in his mind for so long. CASTLE IN THE AIR is the most unrestricted and uninhibited sculpture that he has ever made, because it is all David Winter without a single thought for anything except creating in wax the concepts and forms he had developed in his mind.
