The Citadel Produced By John Hine The Forest of Dean Collection (J Hine) Size: 9 x 4 x 4 inches Originally $50, T are remains of many ancient buldings in the Royal Forest of Dean, some of which inspired David's "Citadel." With its castellated tower and its foundations seeming to grow from within a rocky outcrop, it looks as though it has seen centuries of history unfolding at it feet, and is set to see many centuries more. It's a fairy-tale sort of place as befits this fairy-tale forest w you feel that anything could happen -- and probably has. The whole of this great primeval forest is vibrant with history. People have lived and worked since before the Romans, and you can still sense their presence. The village of St Briavels is a favourite place with visitors today, as it was with the early English kings. It has the only historic castle in the area (perhaps with links to "The Citadel?") Set high above the River Wye, it was built in the 12th century, and was once the home of the Earl of ford in his role as the king's officer in charge of the forest. St Briavels also has the remains of a fortified stronghold -- a citadel perhaps -- built in the 13th century as protection against its marauding Welsh neighbours.
