One of the rarest books in Watchtower history is the Day Dawn or Gospel in Light and Prophecy written originally in 1880 by fellow watchtower contributor John H. Paton. An original co-editor of "Herald of the Morning" with Charles Taze Russell and N.H. Barbour, both Paton and Russell favored leaving the Herald after a debate over the validity of the ransom sacrifice of Jesus with Barbour. The rift, beginning in the early 1879 time period, left Russell with a clear direction to start his own paper, The Watchtower, with it's first issue being printed in summer of 1879. J.H. Paton sided with Russell initially and became a valuable contributor to the early years of Watchtower, Jehovah's Witness, history. It was decided early on that a book would be of interest to replace the Barbour/ Russell collaboration of "the Three Worlds" which seemed even in 1880 as somewhat outdated and "sold out" of it's original 3500 copies. The result was the 1880 Day Dawn printing of 4000 copies, or tabouts. In 1881 Paton himself began leaning towards a doctrine of Universal Salvation and in 1882 his departure became clear in this second edition of Day Dawn of 1882.
