The first of these was published as an ongoing series from 1955 to 1983 . It was followed by mini-series in 1991 and 1999 , and was revived as an ongoing title in 2007 . The focus of each version of the comic has varied over time but most commonly (and currently) features team-ups of characters from across the DC Universe . The first volume of the series ran for 200 issues from August 1955 to July 1983. Originally, The Brave and the Bold was an anthology series featuring adventure tales from past ages with characters such as the Silent Knight , Viking Prince , Golden Gladiator, and Robin Hood . With issue #25, the series was reinvented as a try-out title for new characters and concepts, starting with the Suicide Squad created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Ross Andru . Editor Julius Schwartz hired writer Gardner Fox and artist Kubert to create the team of superhero crime fighters Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The team debuted in the First (1st.) tryout series in The Brave and the Bold #34 (February-March 1961) , and ran for two (2) further appearances (# 35 & 36) in this first tryout series. The second (2nd.) tryout series commenced with #42 and also ran for two (2) more editions (43 & 44) before Hawkman got his own series.Characters and Focus: Hawkman is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published by DC Comics . Originally created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dennis Neville in the 1940, the original Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1, published by All-American Publications in 1940. Several incarnations of Hawkman have appeared in DC Comics, all of them characterized by the use of archaic weaponry and by large, artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight.
