Early brown transferware plate, made by Deakin and Bailey at the Waterloo Factory, Lane End, Staffordshire, England. This company only operated for two years between 1828-30, which makes their small, but beautiful, output extremely rare and desirable. This series is named "Crusaders", and it is one of the most attractive patterns made in transfer ware. The Medieval scene features a knight with his attendants, bidding farewell to his lady and her maids, before the castle portcullis. We can see the ships waiting for them in the distant bay. T is wonderful use of perspective in the scene, with the foreground sharp against the midground and the hazy, misty background. The border is decorated with passion flowers, orchids, roses and peonies on a scattered star background. The plate, which is very well marked to the reverse with the series and makers' name, measures 10 1/2 inches in diameter. The condition is excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. This is a beautiful and rare plate: it is easy to display and will make an impressive addition to any collection of rare or early plates.
