According to Gamba, « this speech is considered by many people the most beautiful ever seen in many centuries» . Riccardi considers it «rare», a work that «always remains of outmost scientific interest» and «a model of polished style in the form of dialogue». Francesco Maria Zanotti Cavazzoni ( 1692-1777), was an Italian mathematician and philosopher, follower of Newton, born in Bologna where was president of the local Marsigli’s Sciences Institute. Zanotti attempted to apply to ideas the Newton’s theory of universal gravitation , and wrote a pamphlet on the subject (who pretended to translate from French): Della forza attrattiva delle idee («The attractive power of ideas») published in 1747 and which had a great success also in the following century. But the main epistemological treatise is the present Della forza dei corpi che chiamano viva («The strength of the bodies that we call living»), which fits in a matter of lively debate among the followers of Newton and Leibniz . In the XVIIIth century, the mathematical and scientific speculation often wandered on the edge of nowhere, dealing with atoms and zeros, granules and particles in experiments on electricity and magnetism. This strange and fascinating essay was considered by the following century a masterpiece of style and a work of great scientific interest: Giacomo Leopardi, in his Crestomazia Italiana della prosa (1827), made a fascinating digest from Zanotti’s work, titled Del nulla, e dell’annichilazione («About nothingless and annihilation»). In a later work, De Viribus centralibus («About central forces», 1762) Zanotti presented a perspective relatively unique to the Newtonian theory of attraction.
