Very interesting and historical cover franked with US 3c Presidential Series (Prexie, Prexy) definitive tied Honolulu, Hawaii, Dec 8 1941, slogan cancel, cellophane (censor) tape at right, to Maryknoll, New York; (on reverse) Honolulu two line civil censor marking "Released/ By I.C.B." Examiner 164 marking. This cover was postmarked the day after the Japanese devastating attack on U.S. Navy ships at and including the U.S. Pearl Harbor Naval Base, as well as other military installations on the island on Dec 7 1941, beginning at 7:51 AM, when 163 dive bombers launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers struck Hawaii. A second wave, beginning at 8:30 AM, saw 170 additional Japanese carrier based aircraft, mainly carrying torpedos, which were aimed at the fleet anchored in Pear Harbor, causing severe damage to 21 ships, and sinking nine, including the battlehsip USS ARIZONA. The death toll from the attack reached 2,350 people, including 68 civilians. Some 1,178 people were injured. A total of 1,177 deaths were recorded from USS ARIZONA alone. Twenty nine Japanese aircrfaft were shot down, out of the 350 involved in the attack. One Japanese midget submarine was taken by USS WARD outside of Pearl Harbor.
