This is a medal that commemorates the Messina earthquake in in 1908.This is a medal from the 1908 Messina earthquake that occurred on December 28th in Sicily and Calabria in southern Italy. It had a magnitude of 7.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme). The epicenter was in the Strait of Messina which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. The earthquake nearly destroyed the cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria and killed between 75,000 and 82,000 people. At the time, it was the most destructive earthquake ever to strike Europe.
