Now, this is another pair of authentic and genuine Bookends from the mid-1920's that have always been popular because of the Content, Style, Material, and Maker.

This Hubley pair has huge appeal amongst collectors of antique relics and amongst Old Iron Bookend & Doorstop collectors. One can see that the bookends have much artistic merit, demonstrating the quality craftsmanship of this famous foundry, which makes them such highly sought after pieces.

Both pieces feature fully figured thoroughbred horses and jockeys. The jockeys possess detailed faces, bearing looks of determination as they hold tightly to the horses' reins with one hand and to their riding crops with the other. The horses are caught in mid-leap as they gracefully clear a low-lying fence hurdle. Their ears are plastered back by the wind, and all four legs are elevated off the bases with the rear legs one on side of the fence and the front legs preparing to land on the opposite side. The crisp lines and curves of the wooden hurdle and the surrounding foliage is also equally well-cast.

The steeplechase is a highly respected and dignified form of horse racing. The name is derived from early races in which the layout of the race course was created in reference to the steeples of local churches. This event involves jumping fences and ditches and maneuvering through the natural and manmade obstacles of the countryside. The steeplechase originated in Ireland in the 18th century and is still a common event in the US and throughout Eastern Europe.

You will find these bookends to be in very good condition despite their ages. The cast iron is heavy, solid, and smooth - not rough like those poor reproductions and imitations. These are definitely the real things! The bodies possess a lovely and heavy antique brass finish that has darkened nicely and evenly over the years.

Each bookend stands at 5" Tall, 4 ½" Long, and 2 ¼" Wide, and the pair weighs 2 lbs. You can find this original American pair in a number of reference guides, including the original Hubley Catalogue, w they are identified as Number 415 in the Antique Brass finish.
