is a rare marked piece of American stoneware with a very unusual decoration of sawtooth and swags all the way around it. This is a cylindrical stoneware jar that is stamped, "S. Bell & Son / Strassburg" Meaning Strassburg VA. You occasionally find pieces that are attributed to this maker, and sometimes you will find a signed piece, but usually with the traditional cobalt decoration that was used on stoneware, but to find a piece that has both this signature and the rare dark brown manganese decoration is very scarce these days. Soloman Bell opened his shop in Strassburg in 1843. It will be an awfully long time till you have another chance to buy a rare piece of stoneware of this quality. It measures 9 ½" high x 6 ½" in diameter. T is a hairline spider down the back of the piece that is quite stable and most of it does not go through to the inside. T is also an insignificant spider on the bottom that also does not go through and actually could have happened in the firing of the piece. All that being said we really considered this piece to be more than collection worthy. We wouldn't have bought it if we thought t were any significant problems with it. It's a BEAUTY! NYS residents add 8.75% for sales tax. U.S. buyer pays $25.00 shipping and insurance. Please e-mail questions before bidding.
