Antique Picture Frame with Gold and Silver Gilt From the Victorian Era, this frame is made of wood, gesso, gilt paint and red velvet. outer measurements are 16,1/4 by 14,5/8 inches. The opening for a picture is 9,5/8" by 7,5/8". This frame is several levels deep.... Very beautiful with only slight cracking and chipping of gesso...please see photos to see how small the flaws are. The opening will fit an 8 by 10 picture and is a rare size to find in this style frame. The outer frame has gold gilded leaves..possibly ivy as t are vines swirling around them. Between the red velvet and the gold part t is a section with silver gilded flowers and designs. The designs, flowers and leaves are all raised up from the frame....so it is either fairly thick gesso or the designs are carved and then covered with gesso and painted. The back of the frame has a thin section of wood that came off at some point over the years ...i have shown it below. Unfortunately my photos don't show the true beauty of this frame...it looks much better in person.
