He studied from 1850 to 1855 under the direction of Paul Weber.Lewis exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for many years beginning in 1854 and later at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Boston Athenaeum. He was elected an Associate of the Pennsylvania Academy in 1859. He became best known for his watercolor landscapes from The Philadelphia, New York, and New England areas and marines.
