DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 191 pages. Publisher: Taschen; (2001). ISBN: 3822855537. [This is published by Taschen, a company with an international reputation for publishing fine, gift quality books with superb photographic quality prints. This book is no exception, though it is part of the “Icons” series. These are produced with “flexi-covers”. Not a hardback book, but not paperback, they are constructed with paper covers over a flexible material and with sewn (not glued) bindings. Though not hardback with dust jacket, these are high quality bindings, and the format, though smaller than a “coffee table” book, is larger than an ordinary paperback, and produced with high quality glossy stock. It is printed in French, German and English. T’s not a lot of text, rather it is a pictorial, with hundreds of magnificent quality prints. As is said, a picture is worth a thousand words – why clutter them up?] Napoleon Bonaparte's excursion into Egypt in the late eighteenth century was far more important to the world than even he had planned. As a new sense of amazement and discovery came over the French invaders, their leader came to realize the need to document their cultural and scientific findings. This book takes an illustrated view of their recordings and how the French expedition, though a military and political fiasco, changed the face of the earth by revealing the splendor of a mysterious and forgotten civilization. CONDITION: NEW. Slight shelf wear to cover consistent with open shelf bookstore stock. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PUBLISHER REVIEW : REVIEW: A hugely ambitious and comprehensive work, the ten volumes of "Description de L'Egypte" were published following Napoleon Bonaparte's 1798 invasion of Egypt. This book presents highlights carefully plucked from the original masterwork in which discoveries of ancient Egyptian civilization, such as the Rosetta stone and the Valley of the Kings, were first revealed to the European world. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS : REVIEW: This is an interesting look at Napoleon's disastrous "Egyptian campaign" which had extraordinary consequences for archaeology. While Napoleon's army was trounced by the British, the hundreds of scholars accompanying them meticulously catalogued and drew the vestiges of Pharaonic Egypt on the banks of the Nile. This volume reproduces, in color and black and white images, the most interesting of these records, from sketches of statue fragments to color renderings of the insides of unearthed temples. This is one of the Taschen Icon series. These fashionable, trim volumes give a nod to a series of icons of art, beauty and style, ranging from Botticelli's Birth of Venus to the unstudied chic of modern London. Each volume is packed full of high-quality color photographs, on heavy paper with flexible binding. 192 pages, many illustrations. REVIEW: Superbly produced of exceptional quality with magnificent prints of art, artifacts, monuments, and photographs. Highly recommended and worth several times the price! REVIEW: Lavish production typical of Taschen. 190 pages with many b/w and color illustrations. Text in English, German and French. READER REVIEWS : REVIEW: This is almost entirely a book of illustrations, with a few in color. The brief introductory text section is given in French, English and German. Most of the illustrations are not captioned, those that do have captions are only in French. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt at the end of the 18th century was a military and political fiasco. However, it did give birth to Egyptology. 500 civilians accompanied Napoleon's army, among them a group of 167 scholars in various fields. Among the many incredible discoveries made by Napoleon's group ...
