An artist in his own right, Mr. DeSimone found a unique way of blending of his work with the joy he got depicting the lives of his fellow Italians; what they did, how they lived and how they "loved." He opened his factory in Palermo, Italy, and the soon developed ways of incorporating his passions onto practical items; vases, urns, dinnerware, platters and the like. Perhaps the most recognizable are his fish-shaped platters painted as fanciful fish. The colors he uses are vibrant and primary and leap off the piece and into our funnybone. His whimsical characterizations are as charming as they are bold and delightful. While some may view his work as "Picasso-like" a closer look reveals a very authentic style and humor unique to Mr. DeSimone and his proteges at his factory. The only real similarity is that Mr. Picasso and Mr. DeSimone were both Masters. The urn before you was acquired in the 1980s and at a time when the factory was unveiling many new and exciting items. It continues to this day producing its wares in the spirit of its founder and creator. So do the knock-offs of his work, and they are quite easy to spot. All DeSimone pieces are signed with the DeSimone name somew on the piece, often times on the bottom, with the exception of Mr. DeSimone's work and the only one signing the pieces he painted on the front. The number accompanying the name usually identifies the painter of that particular piece. It is a badge of honor for a painter to affix his number on the object upon completion of his work. Items not made by DeSimone will not bear a factory signature. Another key difference is in the glazes. The knock-offs tend to have very white, white backgrounds and the glazes are quite glossy. The background of real DeSimone was an off-white in varying degrees and the glazes were rarely glossy, but more satin and soft. The knock-offs don't have the feel of art but rather of the mechanization of art. Authentic DeSimone items tend to have more mass than the imposters currently finding their way into the marketplace. Things to know about the item: It is 13" high and about 5 3/4" around. This item should be washed with mild soap and water. (No dishwasher use and no abrasive of acidic cleansers.) Turning the item you will see the characters flow from one scene to the next as if marching around the vase. On the bottom is the factory signature and the number of the artist who painted the piece. Whether this item stands alone commanding its own space, or whether it is holding some flowers on occasion, it will always have a presence, brightening any setting with its warmth and charm, and bringing good cheer with its colors and sense of humor. La Dolce Vita!
