This is a mid 19th century sea captain's desk box.When fully opened, it contains a large, slanted cloth covered writing surface measuring 10" by 13". The lid has a mirror surrounded by Madras fabric pockets for storage. The interior at the bottom has a piece of paper glued to the wood with a note that states: 'Bought in Calcutta East India by Edward H.Barker in 1855 when a boy in Clipper Ship Taskaway'.The last photo shows two secret drawers behind a partition and under the inkwells. When closed, the box measures approx. 16" by 10 1/2" by 6 1/4".
