This wonderfullyfigural, interesting cloisonne Japanese vase is a good old one. On its face and reverse side are a wise old man and a younger man, probably being mentored by the elder. Off to their left is the proverbial pine tree, the auspicious symbol for long life. On each side is a young man in a grotto with rocks and an object suspended on a post over his shoulder. The garments on all three figures are wonderful and traditional and rich in subtle and many varied colors and designs. The vase is beautifully shaped. On the bottom is inscribed “CPO” within a diamond. While we do not know what “CPO” in a diamond shape stands for, we have learned that other “CPO” symbols are also marked "TOYOKOKI" or "MIYATA". There have been many opinions as to its meaning that have been memorialized through certain venues but have no proven foundation. One of them is that in much later years goods on American bases in Japan could not sell Japanese goods that were not marked “CPO.” Truth or fiction? Who knows? All we can say is that when we purchased this piece we acquired it because it was infinitely more interesting than many cloisonne works we have seen. Size is 9-3/8” tall by approximately 5-1/4” in diameter. The top is 3-5/16” in diameter and the bottom is 3-3/8” in diameter.
