This is a porcelain match holder made by Royal Bayreuth of the devil holding a deck of cards, with the king of diamonds in front. I bought this at an estate auction because it was so unusual. In years of attending auctions I have never seen anything like it and have not found one exactly like it yet. I am not an expert in Royal Bayreuth but did some research and this is what I've found: the blue mark on the back of the piece indicates it was made c. 1870-1914 (they changed to a green mark in 1915). T are 2 right above the head, a small one along the right side, one on the left bottom of the cape, a place w the paint has worn slightly beside the previously mentioned left bottom (smooth, no roughness), and one last place on the back. If this hung on a wall, apparently the nail rubbed in the top areas and caused the paint to flake off. The read more
