This is an "EXCELSIOR DIARY" for the year 1896. It measures approx. (3 3/4" x 6"). Completely filled out with entries for every day of the year, in period pencil. T is a two week period of blank pages w the writer was injured and does not make any entries. The original pencil is still in the diary. The first page has an inscription "A HAPPY XMAS - WALTER & MAY - TO E. NORTHRUP". The writer was the wife of a citrus grower in Southern California. The grower appears to have had a small grove, as his wife continually mentions 10 acres. They grew mostly oranges but mention grapefruit and prunes. The location of the ranch appears to be in the Pomona Valley. Many of the entries are short with the weather for the day and the itinerary of the husband. T are also longer and more descriptive entries, (3-8) lines each. The entries tell of the every day life of the grower and his wife with many trips to the Packing House with their oranges. The husband also did some work for other growers, mentioning "Younglove Ranch" and "Graber Ranch". She mentions him irrigating, trimming pine trees, going to church, etc. In July, the couple and their two children, take a camping trip to what I believe to be Lake Arrowhead Hot Springs in the San Bernardino Mountains.
