DICK TRACY PROMOTIONAL - SONY- '88 RARE

This is a rare promotional item produced by Sony Creative Products, Inc., in 1988 in connection with planned Dick Tracy tie-in merchandising. It may likely be a prototype piece because no similar consumer products appear to have been made for mass distribution. There are 2 other Sony promotional products of the same year with similar coloring and imagery [an ash tray with original box and a glass reflection picture which are also now up on eBay] in which Dick Tracy is shown talking to "Danny"- the likely individual to whom the prototypes were made to promote.

The box measures about 7-5/8 long x 4-3/4 wide by 3-1/2 high. It is all metal with a lithographed, matte green finish. It has a silver closer and a black plastic handle held on by metal rivets. The top pictures a classic, 1940s Chester Gould image of Dick Tracy saying "Now we're going to have a nice long talk with Danny." Tracy is in color with Chester Gould's signature and a red "Dick Tracy." Around the big image are black and silver colored text and images of panels from the Tracy comic strip. The bottom also shows silvered and black images of Tracy strip panels from the 40s including one of Breathless Mahoney. On the bottom is a sticker with a bar code that reads "Expression-Sony Creative Products, Inc." with Japanese inscription. It is in near mint condition. The only defects are a slight indentation on one of the bottom corners that does not affect the images and a few extremely fine scratches on another bottom corner.

This is a terrific, must-have item for collectors of Dick Tracy memorabilia, Chester Gould memorabilia, comic or cartoon character premiums and giveaways, and Americana.
