This is an auction for a six piece Dirk van Erp hammered copper desk set with a double lined, tooled border and unusual interior planishing inside that border as its primary design elements. It's a step above the simple planished pieces, and as such desirable to van Erp collectors for that additional workmanship. There are two pieces by van Erp which are probably additions to the set: the rolling blotter and the letter file. They both have plain hammering without the additional border design. Likely, the owner added pieces by van Erp at a later point to complement the four original pieces. The original set consists of the blotter pad with its riveted and decoratively hammered border ends, assumed to be unmarked as far as is visible because they are riveted to the blotter pad so there is no way to see their backs, marked or otherwise, the perpetual calendar, the pen tray, and the letter opener, all three are marked, bearing the same decorative, tooled border as the blotter pad. The condition of all six pieces is excellent and original. The pen tray in particular is extremely beautiful. Deep hammering on the wall of the repoussed center and the everted handle edges which mirror the form of the border design make it exemplary and distinctive Northern California copper work in its own right. All of the original paper date cards which go with the perpetual calendar are present. They flip over with the remaining months on the reverse. One, as you can see, has been torn in two, but when it is placed inside the calendar frame the tear is unobtrusive and does not affect reading the dates. The color of all the pieces is an original and uniform deep brown. There are no significant marks, dents, scratches or signs of wear and no repair. It is an excellent and very useful group of desk accessories.
What follows are the measurements of the individual pieces: the large blotter pad is 19 1/2" x 26", the perpetual calendar is 6 1/2" x 5 1/4" marked "dirk van erp", the pen tray is approximately 10" x 4" marked "dirk van erp", the blotter is 5 1/2" x 3 1/4" x 3", the letter file is 7 1/4" x 5" marked "dirk van erp", and the letter opener is 10 3/4" x 2 1/4" marked "dirk van erp". The mark is the windmill logo above a box with the words "dirk van erp" inside it, broken on the right side, and the word "San Francisco" below the box, dating the pieces to circa 1915. This is an opportunity to by a desk set rarely seen by this maker, the consummate craft shop in the Bay Area producing great art metal during the Arts and Crafts era in San Francisco. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. I'll do my best to answer them promptly. My reserve for the set is far less than double the price of a single van erp calendar which sold last week on eBay for 850. (260759158192) so someone has the chance to get a great deal for these six pieces. Shipping for this set will be in two packages, one oversize because the blotter cannot be disassembled and will need to be packed separately, and will cost ninety-five (95) dollars anywhere in the Continental United States with USPS parcel post, which includes insurance in full in transit and signature confirmation. I will also consider UPS as a shipper although the cost may be different. I will accept bids from outside the United States although shipping and full insurance will be more and required. Payment due through PayPal within five days of the auction's end. California buyers must pay California Sales Tax unless a valid California Resale number is provided.
