Novi Orbis Indiae Occidentalis 1621The book has been called one of the most idiosyncratic books published on the discovery of America. The presumed author, Caspar Plautius was the abbot of the Benedictine monastery Seitenstetten in Austria, and was also the person to whom the book was dedicated by the fictitious author, Honorio Philopono. Most of the book describes the exploits of the Benedictine priest Bernard Buil of Montserrat, who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage and led a team of papal-appointed missionaries to the peoples of the Americas. Not content with recounting Buil's adventures, Plautius begins the book with a lengthy and fantastic account of the voyage of the Atlantic voyages of St. Brendan, the 5th century Irish monk. The text is accompanied by a set of extraordinary prints depicting. The work is nonetheless filled with authentic details of Caribbean customs, agricultural products (t is one engraving of a potato plant) , local flora and fauna, and arts (including music: the specimen of printed music on pp. 35-36 represents an early printed example of Native American chants).T are 2 Editions of this book. One with and one without the owl plate. Thisone with Owl plate, which seems to be an emblematic plate of an owl between a royal crown and a bishop's miter, symbolizing the Benedictine's achievements for the crown of Spain. Engraved Title page, 2 unnumbered leaves, 1-101 with on verso the tabulu with the plates listed. Starting at 4750$, with a buy it now price that you should definitely consider 7350$ Is this copy better then the one sold previously on ebay? I don't know. are differences, the copy forsale now has wider margins 28 cm x 17.8 cm, it also has a contempary 17th century blindstamped leather binding, and last but not least it has the OWL Plate. All big plus. Furthermore the title-page, the portait of Columbus, and the plates of the Idols are not cut of. On the down side the other plates, are shaved with slight loss of image because they w both vertical in the book and not as fold out as in the last copy. One plate damaged. Bound with this work is another 17th century religious work of no consequence, but together they form as sturdy attractive folio. So while t are some defects, consider: You get a complete copy . The only other copy on the internet is offered by Ursus for 35.000$ with the owl plate and by PRBM gallery in Philadelphia for 27.000$ without (the last copy is probably sold) Recently a copy without any plates made 900 EURO in Germany (without buyers premium!). Title page The engraved architectonic title shows St. Brendan and Bernardo Boyl baptizing a convert, an oval engraving of the West and East Indies below with ship-studded seas between. THE PLATES are all beautiful, strong imprints, not faded as you sometimes see. They tell the story like a comic book and look like a medieval bestiary, with sea monsters and dragons.1. The first plate features a full length portrait of Columbus. Pay attention to the world map + extra OWL PLATE2. A scene of St. Brendan celebrating mass on the back of a whale? To the east are the landmasses of Spain and Africa, to the north the mythic island of St. Brendan. Then: 3. Spanish Court 4.
