"Revered American author Samuel L. Clemens chose as his pen name Mark Twain--a boatman's call indicating deep water ahead which reminded the writer of days on his beloved Mississippi. How appropriate, then, for Twain fan Walt Disney to dub his own river vessel the Mark Twain, at the time reported to be the first paddle-wheeler built in the United States in half a century. As the richly detailed wooden decks were created on a soundstage at the Disney Studio in Burbank, the 105-foot hull was constructed miles away in San Pedro, California. The pieces were assembled in Anaheim--and fit together perfectly! Just prior to the opening of his first Magic Kingdom, Walt and Lilly Disney used the Mark Twain as part of their 30th wedding anniversary party. Then, on July 17 1955, the ship was formally christened by actress Irene Dunne, who had memorably portrayed "Magnolia" in the 1936 film of Edna Ferber's classic Show Boat."
