Up for auction is a restored Disston D-8 8 PPI crosscut saw .Here 's what I did to this saw to get it ready for auction:Handle: The handle is beech. The handle was removed and cleaned up with 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits. It was then given three coats of lacquer. There are no repairs on this handle. All other blemishes are very minor and overall the handle is in nice shape. The horns are in nice shape for the age of the saw (see photos).Blade: I cleaned the blade with various grits of sandpaper. The etch is visible and helps date the saw after 1928. (see photos) I gave the blade a coat of Autosol and then paste wax. The saw plate is flat and straight. This saw plate is in really nice shape. It has a skew back. There is very little pitting on the plate (see photos). See specs below for the size and how I sharpened it. The process I used to sharpen it was: I first "jointed it" and then filed it to reshape the teeth. The saw already had plenty of "set", so I didn't set it. I then "rejointed" and then a final pass with a new file at the proper rake and fleam.Medallion/saw nuts: They were cleaned with mineral spirits and 0000 steel wool. They are steel saw nuts. The medallion is two tone, with a steel outside and a brass center. I hadn't seen a medallion like this before and I didn't see any reference to it on the Disstonian Institute read more
