This is amongst the most exquisite little Mourning lockets we have listed in a while. This tests as 18 ct Carat gold ; SOLID gold NOT 'front & back' or rolled, plated or filled, but 750/1000 18ct solid gold construction, inside and out. The gold has accrued a subtle, reddish pink hue. It dates from around 1865 . As can be seen, this is superbly and richly chased and engraved to the highest standards with ornate and intricate, foliate designs to BOTH sides, with a 'Greek Key' Etruscan design to the rear along with a vacant cartouche for personalisation. To the front is an enamel CROSS, with white enamelled IVY entwined. It measures 2.85cms long, (including its solid rose gold bale/jump-ring) by 1.65cms and it weighs a chunky little 3.5 grams . It opens to reveal compartments, suitable for storing and displaying photographs, locks of hair or other such personal keepsakes. It is complete with solid gold retaining rims to both sides and a fitted compartment/glass panel to one side. This is in a very good condition, especially considering that it is probably 150 years old ! There is evidence of a little touching up to the blue enamelling but this is barely perceptible to the naked eye.
