I believe this is a Voss generator, a predecessor of the more common Wimshurst type. The case is 18 inches wide by 19 1/4 inches high by 8 1/4 inches deep and is in good condition--no splits or cracks, has not been stripped or refinished. The rotating glass disc is approximately 15 1/2 inches in diameter and is in good condition---no cracks or breaks. T is a tiny chip in the edge--it should show near the top of the close-up photo of the right hand side. I think that the circles that appear on the glass are glue residue from one of the contacts being re-attached. They are not scratches or cracks. I am unsure how to remove the glue so will leave that to the new owner. The fixed glass disc is approximately 16 by 16 inches and what is visible is in good condition. I can't see behind the front disc but t is nothing to indicate that t is any damage. I took the photos in 2 different sessions and on some of them I forgot to attach the collecting comb knob above the right-hand Leyden jar. The knob for the left-hand comb is missing. All Leyden jars, brushes, collecting combs are present and in good condition. The disc rotates freely but I have not tried to generate a charge. The machine was manufactured by Dodd & Struthers Co., a well known early lightning rod company in Des Moines, Iowa, and was patented in 1899, 1900, and 1902. The size is given as 16, probably referring to the size of the discs. T are also 3 miniature demonstration buildings and other accessories. A lightning rod salesman would have used them to demonstrate the advantages of having buildings grounded through a lightning rod system. One of the buildings appears to have caught fire during a demonstration. On Feb.8 a similar machine # 280197505750 sold for over $800.00 and it didn't have the buildings or acessories. Shipping will be in 2 boxes--a wooden crate for the generator and a separate box for the other pieces. Shipping for the 2 boxes to the lower 48 United States ranges from $80.00 to 120.00 depending on destination. If it sells for more than $600.00 I will contribute $50.00 to the shipping cost. Pick up is available. I live about a one hour drive North of Toronto. Or for the price of the gas I would deliver it to the Canadian side of the Border at Niagara Falls, Fort Erie / Buffalo or Sarnia / Port Huron. The scans might look a bit fuzzy but the item itself is sharp and clear. TERMS: Buyer to pay shipping at actual cost. No handling fee. Combined shipping on multiple purchases. I ship the item immediately upon receipt of payment but I have no control over shipping time. Purchase price plus return shipping refunded if item is not as described. Payment by money order or personal check in U.S. dollars or equivalent Canadian dollars or British pounds sterling. I can not accept PayPal. I do not end auctions early. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks for looking and good luck.
