T is something deeply touching about this solemn couple who are carved with upraised arms in the Tellem pose.

They represent the primal couple of Dogon mythology, the Nommo, who correspond to the Biblical Adam and Eve. Conceived in heaven by the creator god Amma, they descended to earth in an ark and founded humanity with all its miraculous skills. Because they date to a mythical time before sexual differentiation was established, they are hermaphroditic, both having brea sts, although one has male gentials and the other female.

The impression of agelessness and gravity, even majesty, is very powerful.

These figures were extremely sacred to the Dogon and kept on altars and in shrines, w they were regularly brought offerings. They have a dark patina which was obtained by annointing them with sacrificial blood and millet beer. They are around 100 years old and in good condition apart from cracks to each of the bases.

A rare and valuable pair offered at a low reserve.
