Wooden encrusted statue of two NOMMO's, used on the altar of the Binou, the sanctuary for the ancestors.

Weight 257 gram and high 17 centimeters.

The Dogon God Amma created the earth from a handfull of clay and the earth was the body of a woman on her back with her face to the sky, a termite hill being her clitoris.

Amma, being alone, wanted to have intercourse with the earth and his attempt created the first disturbance of the world order. The termite hill prevented Amma to have intercourse. Amma destroyed the termite hill, a brutal circumcision, in order to get to the earth. Because of the violence Amma had used, only a single creature, the youroukou (a jackal) was born instead of the desired perfect twins, the Nommo´s.

The next time Amma had intercourse with the earth no circumcision and violence was needed and this resulted in the birth of the first Nommo´s, two creatures identical to Amma. They returned soon to their father Amma in heaven, but only after they had given their naked mother earth a cloth of fiber straight from heaven, drenched in the spirit and the words of Amma.

The youroukou soon did get lonely, being single, and was longing for the love of his mother and the words and spirit of Amma, his father, words now also being present in the skirt of the earth. The jackal wanted to have intercourse with the earth and although she resisted the jackal for a long time, at last she was conquered. The jackel had intercourse with his mother, took the skirt of the earth and thus did possess the spirit and the words of Amma. From that day untill now everyday the old men of every village try to get information from Amma through the jackel by reading the jackals actions in the sand.

After the incest of the jackal Amma was no longer interested in intercourse with the earth and created a man and a woman, so men itself could reproduce and Amma was no longer needed. The perfect twins would never be created again.........................
